Occam's Razor Theory of Combat

I'm in the midst of a great science fiction series: The Old Man's War by John Scalzi.  In the second book, The Ghost Brigades, I ran across this great gem:

The simplest way of kicking someone's ass is usually the correct one.

So true.  In my earlier days I used to be dazzled by all the fancy techniques - the 'wow' factor.  As I matured, I began to realize that all the flash was exactly that.  It's the basics that are the simplest and most effective.
